It had been a long time between episodes, and the world changed while I was gone. Memorial Day 2020 meant no backyards and no cookouts, so Valentino and I picked up The Upper West’s Memorial Day box and ate it in the car. It was only my second car video. The first was with Matt from Wreckless Eating.
The box covers the whole cookout. You get two double Wagyu burgers on sesame seed buns with cheese, red onion, tomato and lettuce. The char hits you immediately, and the burger drips the way a good burger should. The house-made chips are crunchy and seasoned, so no ketchup needed (ketchup is the devil’s condiment anyway). The corn is done like the elote you buy from the corn man on an LA street corner, and I squeezed lime over mine. The potato salad still had chunks of potato and didn’t drown in mayo, with a chipotle kind of seasoning, though I’d have turned the onion up. Cold seedless watermelon finishes it. The two chocolate chip cookies I left alone, because I don’t do chocolate chip.
For a little extra, they’ll send you home with cocktails in mason jars. Don’t drink those in the car.
Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and this was summer in a box. Stay healthy, keep your distance, and I’ll see you next week.
