Matt and I went to The Guild in LA to eat bugs, at a dinner from our friend Ally, who’s spreading the word that bugs are a sustainable way to eat.
A mushroom bruschetta with crickets got a four. A salad with crickets and mealworms was the opposite of what you’d expect: the mealworms ate like croutons, and the salad itself, heavy on the onions with a funky cheese, was the worst part. The chili had mealworms and one cockroach in it, and it was a five, the best thing all night. The mealworm pasta didn’t work; soft mealworms have a weird texture. Dessert was vanilla ice cream with cricket chocolate, a little tangy, like a Kit Kat. Five.
The one complaint about bugs: their shells get stuck in the roof of your mouth. Other than that, I’d eat bugs all day.
