Gobble ‘Til You Wobble: Slater’s Thanksgiving Burger Delight
2013 has flown by. It feels like the year just started, yet we’re already in the midst of the holiday season. This month of thanksgiving, I decided to take on the 30 Day Gratitude Challenge – a daily moment of appreciation and no complaining, regardless of any challenges. Among the things I’m grateful for is Slater’s 50/50’s Thanksgiving Burger.
A friend and I had planned to try The Bulgogi Beef Burger earlier last month, but things didn’t work out. We rescheduled for Slater’s on its debut day, November 1st, choosing the Pasadena location.
This month’s burger features a turkey patty topped with brioche dressing, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, and sage mayo on a honey wheat bun. It’s simple but not lacking in flavor. It doesn’t elicit the “om nom nom” reaction of a bacon-heavy burger, but provides a warm, comforting feeling reminiscent of a Thanksgiving family gathering. It’s a worthy alternative to a traditional turkey dinner.
The turkey patty is the most interesting element. When paired with Old Viscosity Ale, a strong stout, the beer’s mocha/cappuccino notes cleanse the palate, offering a new interpretation of the well-seasoned patty with each bite. You’d expect such a sweet beer to overpower the ingredients, especially the cranberry sauce, but it doesn’t. It adds depth to the turkey patty, ensuring it’s not overshadowed.
While Lagunitas Chez Style Pils is the suggested pairing, I believe Old Viscosity Ale is superior. Its contrasting flavors enhance the burger experience.
It’s no wonder this burger is served annually. Hopefully, it becomes a staple tradition at Slater’s. It’s delicious, and with the right beer, every bite is refreshing.
