Iowa was colder than I’d been warned, cold enough that I could barely hold a pen to fill out the paperwork for my unit. I’d been sick, and now I knew why.
I grabbed a Subway sandwich to eat on the way out of the cold: the cheesy garlic steak on honey oat, with bell peppers, onions, pepper jack and some crispy, crunchy bits on top. The crunchy bits were the best part. Otherwise, it was a Subway sandwich. I didn’t expect more, and I didn’t get more. It also came out of the microwave cold in the middle, which is the kind of thing that makes fast food frustrating.
I needed food, and it was food. Orange juice on the side, and back out into the cold.
