It’s not always sunshine and Florida skies. After dropping off an RV in Florida, I came home to a late, dark Ohio night and a chassis to drive to Iowa, a truck that was a nightmare to handle. The only thing that could help was Waffle House.
I took it home: grits with a lot of butter and a little sugar and salt, raisin toast and eggs. I didn’t like grits growing up. I can’t say whether Waffle House changed that, but I like them now. Sweet or savory is a fight people take seriously, and I’m on the buttery, little-bit-sweet side.
I’ve been going to Waffle House for years and still don’t know the secret menu. Somebody in line ordered hash browns a way I’d never heard of. If you know the codes, tell me.
Some nights the job ends with a 4 a.m. Waffle House run and then bed, and that was this night.
