There is a particular courage required to take yourself to a fine-dining room alone, on a night meant for two, and order as though the empty chair across from you were occupied by someone worth impressing. My date fell through. Lucia did not.
I’d been chasing this place for a year. I first heard of it on TikTok from two thousand miles away, back in Ohio, where Lucia lived in my mind as a piece of home I couldn’t reach. I tried to book it once before, last fall, and couldn’t get in. So when I finally landed here – on an impromptu Friday night, on a reservation my brother made for me while I was flying into the city, having meant to bring a date and arriving alone anyway – it felt less like dinner and more like something I’d been owing myself. I came home to LA, and Lucia was the first table I sat at.
Tucked at 351 N Fairfax, Lucia is the rarest thing in this city: a restaurant that knows exactly what it is. I’d walked in half-expecting Animal – the genre-defining room that went dark in 2023 – sure this was its old address. It wasn’t. Animal stood up the block at 435; the city had quietly rearranged itself while I was away. Lucia is its own room, nobody’s ghost, on the same celebrated stretch of Fairfax as Canter’s and Jon & Vinny’s. Black-owned, Afro-Caribbean, and built by founder Sam Jordan to be, in the house’s own language, transportive without being theme-like. That phrase should be carved over the door. Too many restaurants cosplay a culture; they hang the flag, pipe in the playlist, and call it homage. Lucia does the harder thing. It simply is the diaspora, in the room, in the rum, in the well-dressed, sweet-smelling, genuinely happy patrons, in the DJ threading hip-hop and R&B and island rhythm through a dimly lit room the color of bone and candlelight. There is a restroom attendant. There is lotion. There are mints. Reader, you know precisely what kind of establishment deploys mints.
It feels, as I scribbled into my phone between courses, very me.
I began with the Mango Cosmo, a cocktail that delivered a clean, civilized buzz and – mercifully – a hint of mango without being a whole tree. Restraint in a fruit cocktail is nearly extinct; most bartenders mistake “mango” for “marmalade.” Not here. (The bar program is more adventurous than I plumbed in one sitting; there’s an okra martini on the list I didn’t get to, so whatever clean note I thought I tasted under the mango, defer to the bar. They’re doing more than I caught.)
Then came the reason I crossed town: chef Cleophus Hethington’s jerk-glazed Lamb Shank.
Let me be honest about my biases, because I have a standing philosophy here. I believe meat should have some pull, some toothsome resistance, a little fight left in it. The bite is part of the pleasure. So I don’t blanket-subscribe to tendernism, the meat-falls-off-the-bone gospel Walter “Unc” Johnson, Mr. Tendernism himself, made famous and turned into a movement. No slight to Unc. The man is a treasure and he’s earned every bit of his shine; I just hold a different article of faith about texture. So understand the weight of what I’m about to confess: this shank met me in the middle. It was tender, yes – but it kept the resistance I look for, never surrendered before I’d earned it. Enough tendernism to respect the man and his word; enough bite to respect the animal. The lamb is mild, not gamey, but unmistakably itself. You know it’s lamb. And there’s precisely enough fat on it to make you smile, without so much that it would offend the lean and the health-fearful at the next table.
The spice shines without staging a coup, cardamom and allspice warming the braise without ever shouting. Beneath it, whipped sweet potato gone quietly tart with goat cheese, to my surprise, and a tangle of fried shoestrings up top for crunch.
The one flaw, and I’d be a coward to omit it: the jerk sauce runs a touch salty. Good. But salty. I note it not to wound but because a review that only flatters is an advertisement, and I am not for sale tonight.
The service deserves its own paragraph, because it ran on silence: the highest form of it. My waiter spoke when there was reason to. But the real revelation was the young woman working the tables, who never said a word to me at all. She refilled my water unasked. She folded my napkin while I sat there, smiled, and moved on to do the same down the row. The bussers cleared my plate without the interrogation, no “are you still working on that,” none of the verbal hovering that turns a meal into a hostage negotiation. They read the fork. They read the plate. They let the quiet etiquette of the table do the talking, the way good rooms have always done it. No empty plates hung around like unwanted guests. I have been to the other kind of restaurant, the kind that mistakes interruption for attentiveness and asks if everything’s okay four times before you’ve finished a thought. Lucia trusts you to enjoy your meal. It is a profound and increasingly rare courtesy.
And then, dessert. The guava-and-cheese pastelito.
I want to be measured here, and I cannot. The thing arrived molten, tongue-scaldingly, recklessly hot, fresh from a fire that clearly respects its work. The lamination was real: shattering layers, a caramelized sugar crust catching the candlelight. And when I cut into it, the smell of guava knocked me to the ground. I am not being cute. The aroma has physical mass. I burned my tongue because I could not wait, and I deserved it, and I’d do it again.
Which brings me to my single real grievance, and it’s a telling one: that dessert proved the kitchen can plate hot. Volcanically hot. So the lamb shank – which reached me hot at the center but cooled at the edges, the tell of a plate that sat – wasn’t a flaw of the recipe but of timing, of the distance between fire and table. The guava snitched on the kitchen. Close that gap and Lucia has no weak link at all.
I came alone and left full – of food, of drink, of the particular satisfaction of a room that serves its culture instead of impersonating it. The best part of the night never came on a plate. I’d asked to speak with the GM, Toni Puritty, and we were nearly done talking when I looked up and saw Bill Esparza crossing the room. Bill’s a friend, a James Beard writer I’ve worked beside for years: Tacolandia, the festivals, the private dinners, a few TV shoots. I hadn’t planned on him, hadn’t even seen him come in. He was just there. I’d been gone from this city long enough to forget what it feels like to be known in it. We caught up a minute and shook hands. Nobody made a moment of it. That’s how I knew I was home.
