No Kitty, This is My Potpie!

Have you ever tasted something so extraordinary that you considered it the pinnacle of your culinary journey? For me, that dish was Killer Shrimp. I’m known for passionately advocating for foods that I believe are life-changing, and I even went so far as to declare that Killer Shrimp could be the iconic comfort food of Los Angeles, a city it truly represents (ref. Killer Shrimp: Saving Los Angeles). This shrimp au jus and french bread combination originated here and has remained a beloved staple. When Lee Michaels created Killer Shrimp over 30 years ago, I doubt he envisioned its enduring popularity or the possibility of surpassing it. Last summer, when I wrote about Killer Shrimp’s opening in Hermosa Beach, I couldn’t have imagined tasting something more remarkable than the original dish. Yet, that’s precisely what has happened. This potpie surpasses Killer Shrimp and every other potpie I’ve encountered, much like Heath Ledger’s Joker overshadowed Batman. Lucious, seal the cave entrance; Batman is no more.

A sturdy yet delicate puff pastry-like crust blankets a rich broth filled with potatoes, mixed vegetables, and shrimp. The texture is enhanced by creamy cubed potatoes, and the Killer Shrimp filling transforms into a consistency reminiscent of rice congee rather than an au jus. The pie’s flavors and spices are as bold and surprising as the original dish, catching me off guard even though I continue to indulge.

Killer Shrimp has undoubtedly made its mark, and I hope it continues to captivate taste buds far and wide. I have a new favorite potpie; will you discover yours?
