I’ve Got A Date!

When we start a new relationship, there is usually a kaleidoscopic period of discovery, figuring out each other’s likes and dislikes, favorite foods and allergies, styles, pleasures, annoyances, strengths, and weaknesses.  Early on, I learned my girlfriend loves surf and turf.  With this revelation in mind, I was thrilled to be invited to Oliver’s Prime, a new steakhouse located in the same building that cultivated Boa, at the Grafton Hotel on Sunset Boulevard.  I am typically wary of hotel restaurants, but my concerns vanished as I opened the brightly lit menu.  Like a child, I was delighted by its elegant simplicity.  Basking in the menu’s glow and admiring the silverware adorned with a concave bull’s head, I knew Oliver’s Prime would be an unforgettable experience, a cherished memory from our early dates.

The decor reminded me of Chez Paul, the posh restaurant where Jake and Elwood would sway Trumpeter-turned maître d’ Alan Rubin into rejoining the band.  Like the Blues Brothers, I too, was on a mission from God, but not to reunite a band; but to create a lasting, intimate experience for my girlfriend.  We dined and soaked in the atmosphere of the 60s-themed restaurant.

My main course was a 10oz Filet of Bison, garnished with roasted garlic and thyme, and topped with a Lobster tail.  It was accompanied by sweet and salty Pearl Onions and Applewood Bacon. But first, the Lobster Caprese appetizer kissed my lips and awakened my palate as a Prince Florian’s kiss had awakened Snow White.  It was light yet flavorful, a perfect prelude to the surf and turf.  The mozzarella complemented the lobster, a delightful contrast to the full tail that came with my entrée.  The bison filet was sensual and pure.  Lightly seasoned and seared, the salt, pepper, and char enhanced the moist, buttery meat without overwhelming it.  The taste was as pure as the Allnatt diamond is vivid yellow.  The lobster tail was smooth and decadently sweet.  Both meats, paired with the pungent garlic and thyme, delighted my taste buds, and the posh decor made me feel like royalty.

The Pearl Onions and Applewood Bacon were exceptional and kept me engaged until the very last bite.  My girlfriend’s mashed potatoes, which I sampled, were creamy and delicious.  The only disappointment of the evening was the truffle Mac N Cheese, which was bland and lackluster.  Thankfully, the desserts, bread pudding and ice cream, quickly redeemed the experience.

An evening of exquisite food and wine, coupled with artistic, mood-setting decor, created an enduring memory. Oliver’s Prime truly delivered an intimate, special experience that my girlfriend and I will cherish.
